RESPONSIBILITY
Word of the Week for 3/11/2019 by Hailey Wilkinson, GMC Prep Cadet
As Georgia Military College Prep School cadets, we are taught that “you are always responsible for how you act, regardless of how you feel” (Robert Tew). Every morning when we put on our uniform, we are not only representing GMC, we are representing the future of the nation. It is our own responsibility to come to school and go out into the community ready to accomplish the goals of the day. We honor those with whom we are associated by being responsible because everything thing we do relates back to them.
Being responsible is a part of our daily lives. A lack of responsibility leads to little ever being accomplished. For example, if people are told they never have to work another day in their lives, a majority of them would not go to work anymore. When we lose accountability, often times, we lose the initiative to complete a responsibility. When we do not rely on each other, we lose initiative because we do not take on the obligation to accomplish a task. It is important for our sense of responsibility to be both for others and for ourselves.
A key part of responsibility is how one can complete tasks while also remembering that how they act is important. I see this in my everyday life as a student-athlete. Competing in Raiders and gymnastics all while keeping up with my schoolwork has taught me how to be proficient with my time. I have accepted the responsibility of being involved in athletics because GMC has shown me that staying on top of work can help one accomplish goals. Along with accomplishing my goals, I have to remain in control of my actions. I must remember that I am in control, and, if I forget that, it can lead me to make a mistake that I would regret. I must always be responsible with my actions even when my feelings are leading me astray. People must remember that no one can force another to act a certain way; we are always in control of the things we do. That fact alone gives each person the responsibility to make the right choice, no matter how they feel.
Responsibility is something that will follow everyone for the rest of their lives. Being in high school is great preparation for the real world where being held accountable for one’s actions towards others matters more than ever. GMC pushes cadets to honor themselves and learn to step up to all challenges, regardless of the situation, with determination and composure.
